First of all, what is a warung??
A warung is (typically) a small, family-owned restaurant or cafe serving local Indonesian dishes.
Here’s a list of my 5 favourite go-to warungs in Canggu:
1) GIVE Cafe
Daily 7:00-21:00
100% vegan with 100% of proceeds going to charity! How amazing is that?! And their food is amazing!! I absolutely love Give, from the cutest decor to their delicious food. They have an a la carte menu with Western options (their French toast is awesome!) as well as Indonesian dishes. Would highly recommend their nasi campur (choose your own dishes from their display). Also, their peach star fruit tea is perfection – just remember to stir it before you drink it!
2) Vinny’s Warung
Pantai Batu Bolong Street No.37, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali 80361
100% vegan and organic, with no MSG! Their nasi campur is so good!! The potato fritters are my absolute fave; I always get double! And for drinks, their hot chocolate is incredible. Pink lemonade is also good. They have 2 locations now – one on Batu Bolong, and one in Berewa, so you’re covered for both sides of the shortcut. They sell some vegan goods in store, and have homemade made-to-order goodies like butters and spreads, sambals and sauces, cakes, and more! They have an a la carte menu where you can get Western meals, too, and you can try their homemade spreads.
Vinny is also the biggest sweetheart! She takes the time to meet and connect with her customers, which I believe separates the good restaurant owners from the incredible restaurant owners. She really cares and it shows! The food speaks for itself, but having an owner who makes personal connections with her customers makes all the difference 🙂
3) Oma Jamu
100% vegan warung where you can choose 7 food items for 44,000 IDR and if you sit towards the back, there’s a lovely view of rice fields. They have an a la carte menu, but I have yet to try it. They also have a small grocery section where you can buy your own produce, as well as bottles of jamu and other health drinks!
4) Warung Bu Mi
This isn’t completely vegan but it has tons of options and it’s the cheapest that I’ve found, especially for its location! It’s right on the main Batu Bolong strip, near Cafe Organic. I usually always get the same things: tofu, tempeh, kang kong, sweet potato leaves, and brown rice. All that costs 19,000 IDR. The jackfruit is also good!
